Short answer: Use a free simulator, write your rules down first, take at least 50 trades at one size, and count every cost. Practice is worth doing, because the record of people who skip it is grim: in one study of Brazilian day traders, 97% of those who kept going for 300 days or more lost money. But a good paper record proves less than it feels like. It shows you can follow your rules, not that you have an edge.

Set it up

StepWhat to do
Pick a simulatorFree ones with no sign-up, compared. Stocks: simul8or or Tradicted. Bitcoin, gold or NFL games on a real order book: Rizon
Use a realistic balanceTrade what you'd really have, not the $100,000 it gives you. Otherwise the sizes mean nothing
Write the ruleWhat gets you in, what gets you out, and your largest loss for the day. If you can't write it down, it isn't a rule
Keep a logDate, market, size, entry, exit, PnL, and one line on why

Run it like an experiment

  1. One rule at a time. Change two things and you won't know which one worked.
  2. At least 50 trades before you judge it. A win rate over 10 trades is noise. Even over 50, a coin flip lands anywhere between 36% and 64%, about 19 times in 20.
  3. Count costs. Subtract the spread and any fee from every trade, even if the simulator doesn't.
  4. Then test it on days you didn't look at. A rule tuned to last week will look great on last week.

What the numbers say about real day traders

These are studies of real accounts, and they're why it's worth practicing before you risk anything.

StudyWhoFinding
Chague, De-Losso and Giovannetti, 20191,551 Brazilian futures day traders who lasted 300+ days97% lost money, and only 17 of them, 1.1%, earned more than the minimum wage
Barber, Lee, Liu and Odean, 2014About 450,000 Taiwanese day traders a yearAbout 20% earn a profit in a typical year; under 1% outperform consistently
Barber, Lee, Liu, Odean and Zhang, 2018Taiwanese day tradersMore than 75% quit within two years

The figures are net of fees and before tax, and one author has disputed the Brazilian paper's conclusions. The pattern holds across countries, though.

What fake money can and can't teach

It can teach youIt can't teach you
The platform: orders, stops, what a fill looks likeHow you behave when the loss is real
Whether you can follow your own rulesWhether you'd get filled at those prices in size, unless someone is really on the other side
Whether a rule loses money quickly (a very useful answer)Whether a rule really makes money: that takes far more trades

Do you still need $25,000?

In the US, not for long. FINRA has replaced the old pattern day trader rule, including its $25,000 minimum, with new intraday margin standards effective June 4, 2026. Brokers have until Oct 20, 2027 to phase them in, so check yours. The rule was never the main obstacle: the numbers above are.

FAQ

Can I practice day trading with fake money for free?

Yes. simul8or, Tradicted, ChartMini and Rizon need no account or deposit. Wall Street Survivor and TradingView are also free, and Wall Street Survivor asks you to open a practice account.

What is day trading with fake money called?

Paper trading, from when people wrote their trades on paper.

How long should I paper trade before using real money?

Until your rule has survived at least a few hundred trades after costs, on data you didn't tune it to. Most people should expect that answer to be "never", and that's cheap to learn on paper.

Do 97% of day traders lose money?

In the best-known study, 97% of Brazilian day traders who lasted at least 300 days did. It isn't a universal figure. In Taiwan about 20% made money in a typical year, and under 1% did so consistently.

Can I make $100 a day day trading?

Some can, but few do it reliably. In the Brazilian study, the top individual made only about US$310 a day, and only 1.1% beat US$16 a day. Remember to count what your time is worth.

Is paper trading the same as real trading?

The mechanics are, the psychology isn't. Paper won't show you what a real loss does to your next decision.
