> **Short answer:** Brokers such as Pocket Option and Quotex advertise free demo accounts with virtual balances. A demo is useful for learning the buttons, but it can't show you the things that go wrong with real money: the broker sets the payout and takes the other side, and regulators in several countries have warned about these firms. To practice up/down trading with no broker, [Rizon](https://rizon.markets/?m=BTC-1m&ref=learn-binary-options-demo-no-deposit) has 15-second, 1-minute and 5-minute Bitcoin and gold contracts on an open order book, with no deposit or sign-up. It's paper only, so nothing pays out.

## What's on offer

| Where | Demo balance | Other side | Can you deposit real money |
|---|---|---|---|
| [Pocket Option](https://pocketoption.com/en/) | 50,000 virtual, per its home page | The broker | Yes |
| [Quotex](https://quotex.io/en/sign-up/fast/) | 10,000 USD, per its sign-up page | The broker | Yes |
| [Rizon](https://rizon.markets/?m=BTC-1m&ref=learn-binary-options-demo-no-deposit) | $1,000 paper, with a refill | Other accounts in a public book | No: it's paper only |

## What a demo can't show you

| In a demo | With real money |
|---|---|
| The payout looks fine | At an 80% payout you need [55.6% wins to break even](https://rizon.markets/learn/horizon-contract-vs-binary-option), and the venue sets that payout |
| Trades fill instantly | You can't see a book, so you can't see what your trade really cost |
| Balance goes up, you feel ready | [US regulators warn](https://www.sec.gov/oiea/investor-alerts-bulletins/ia_binaryoptions.html) that some platforms refuse withdrawals |
| Nothing is at risk | The UK banned these products for retail traders outright, and the EU restricted them |

## What regulators say

Check the regulator where you live before you deposit anywhere. Some public warnings, and the rules around them:

| Regulator | What it says |
|---|---|
| [UK FCA, on PocketOption](https://www.fca.org.uk/news/warnings/pocketoption) | "This firm is not authorised by us and may be targeting people in the UK" |
| [UK FCA, on binary options](https://www.fca.org.uk/news/statements/fca-confirms-permanent-ban-sale-binary-options-retail-consumers) | Permanently banned for retail consumers since April 2019; "gambling products dressed up as financial instruments" |
| [Reserve Bank of India alert list](https://rbidocs.rbi.org.in/rdocs/Content/PDFs/ALERTLIST10022023CC5FC4ACD619431497A56B6894188478.PDF) | Names Quotex and Pocket Option among entities not authorised to deal in forex or run forex platforms |
| [Italy's CONSOB](https://www.consob.it/web/consob-and-its-activities/orders-2021) | Ordered the activity through quotex.io and quotex.com to cease, December 2021 |
| [Spain's CNMV](https://www.cnmv.es/portal/ResultadoBusqueda?nombre=quotex&tipo=1) and [Portugal's CMVM](https://www.fsma.be/en/cmvm-issues-warning-concerning-quotexmaxbit-llc-and-quotexawesomo-ltd) | Published warnings about Quotex entities, 2021 and 2023 |
| [EU's ESMA](https://www.esma.europa.eu/press-news/esma-news/esma-ceases-renewal-product-intervention-measure-relating-binary-options) | Temporarily banned sales to retail clients in 2018 to 2019, then let it lapse once most national regulators had their own measures |

## Up/down with no broker

A [horizon contract](https://rizon.markets/horizon-contracts) has the same payoff: Higher or Lower, a fixed payout, all or nothing. The difference is the market around it.

| | Broker's binary option | Horizon contract on Rizon |
|---|---|---|
| Other side | The broker | Another account |
| Payout | Set by the broker, usually under 100% | Always 2× |
| What it costs | Built into the payout | The spread, which you can see |
| Can you see every quote | No | Yes |
| Can you quote your own | No | Yes |
| Money | Real | Paper: no deposits, no withdrawals, no winnings |

So it's practice, not income, and you can't cash out. It's a clean way to find out whether you can read a 1-minute chart better than a coin flip, with no one on the other side profiting if you can't. [How to practice](https://rizon.markets/learn/how-to-practice-bitcoin-up-or-down-for-free) has drills.

## FAQ

### Can you trade binary options with no deposit?

On a demo account, yes. To trade for real money you'd have to deposit, on a platform you should check first with your regulator.

### Does Quotex have a demo account?

Its sign-up page advertises a $10,000 demo account for training. We couldn't check it first-hand, as its site blocked us.

### Are binary options legal?

It depends on the country. The UK banned sales to retail consumers in 2019. Many other regulators restrict them or warn against offshore platforms. This isn't legal advice.

### Can demo trading make you money?

No. Demo money isn't real, and a good demo record says little about real trading. Be wary of anyone offering to manage your account or sell you a "signal" on the strength of one.

### Is up/down trading the same as binary options?

The payoff is. Prediction markets' Up or Down contracts, binary options and [horizon contracts](https://rizon.markets/learn/horizon-contract-vs-binary-option) all pay a fixed amount or nothing, and differ in who sets the price and who's on the other side.
